Confidentiality: All of the information from the intake form and any communication with me is indefinitely confidential- even your name. This means your personal information will never be shared outside of our relationship, even if you don’t retain my services, unless the law requires it or you consent to disclosure. As the Law Society of Ontario puts it, a paralegal must protect confidential information at all times, for all time.
Information Retention: Your personal information will only be retained for as long as necessary to achieve the purpose for which it was collected. Physical copies will be destroyed, while electronic copies of some information will be stored securely in the Cloud for 10 years. Per PIPEDA, you may request your information be deleted at any time.
For Flat-Fee services, payment is made immediately in exchange for services rendered.
For services charged by the hour, clients are typically billed on a monthly basis.
If you’re confused- its because its confusing! There is more than one answer:
A financial retainer is a sum of money, paid up front, to cover the fees and expenses that will be incured while I am performing work on your behalf. This money doesn’t belong to the paralegal; it stays in a trust account and any unused portion will be returned to the client. This will always accompany a written retainer agreement.
A written retainer agreement is the legal document, essentially a contract, that lays out the scope of work I will be doing on your behalf and the fee schedule we will be using, among other important details.
I absolutely do! Just indicate that your prefer Zoom or Google Meetings on the form, above.
It is my professional duty to set you up for success. If I don’t think your case will be decided in your favour, I will encourage you to settle the dispute early, outside of the courts or tribunal. My job is to undertake to achieve the best possible outcome. My main values are compassion and transparency- I’m here to help.
It is my responsibility to give you sound advice after considering all of the facts and information you provide me. The legal system can feel intimidating and confusing. I do offer a paid consultation where I explain your options and the general next steps. The purpose of the initial consultation is to understand your situation, check for conflicts of interest, and consider whether there are any actions you may take.
Clients may end the Client-Paralegal relationship at anytime, and for any reason. If I have performed work on your behalf since your last invoice or there is an outstanding payment due, you will be provided with a final invoice as soon as possible, and payment will be due 30 days after issuance.
